Layered in Warmth with Cheryl Law

How would you describe your interior style in three words?

Warm, cosy and effortless.
I’m drawn to spaces that feel calm and inviting, with softer textures and natural materials to create a home that feels both elevated and lived-in.

What’s one small touch that instantly makes a space feel like home to you?

Lighting. I have a strict “no big lights” rule. Whether it’s a floor lamp in the corner of a room or a soft table lamp glowing in the evening, layered lighting instantly creates warmth, atmosphere and a sense of comfort that makes a space feel like home.

Has your approach to decorating evolved over the years or with different life stages like moving house?

Absolutely. Earlier on, I was more drawn to trends and statement pieces. Over time, I’ve become much more intentional about what I bring into my home. I often think about decorating the same way I think about curating a capsule wardrobe – investing in timeless, high-quality foundations that work beautifully together and can evolve over time. Moving house reinforced that philosophy and taught me the value of choosing pieces I genuinely love rather than simply following what’s popular in the moment.

What’s one room or corner in your home that always brings you joy?

My dining area.
The light filtering through the sheer curtains throughout the day creates the most beautiful atmosphere. It’s where we gather, share meals and slow down, and there’s something about the combination of warm timber, soft textures and natural light that feels incredibly calming.

How do you balance practicality with style when it comes to home décor?

I always start with functionality and then layer in beauty.
The pieces I choose need to work for everyday life, but I also want them to contribute to the overall feeling of the home. Durable materials, comfortable furniture and versatile pieces are important, but I look for options that still feel elevated and thoughtfully designed

What textures or materials do you naturally gravitate toward when decorating a space?

Natural timber, stone, linen and wool.
I love materials that bring warmth and texture without relying on bold colour. They add depth and character while maintaining a calm, neutral palette, and they tend to age beautifully over time.

Rugs are often the finishing touch, how do you decide on the right one for a room?

I see a rug as the foundation of the space.
I usually start with scale first, then texture and tone. The right rug should anchor the furniture, soften the room and create cohesion between all the other elements. I generally gravitate towards subtle textures and neutral tones with a unique statement like curved egdes that complement the space rather than compete with it.

What’s your go-to tip for layering rugs or adding coziness underfoot?

Focus on complementary textures and tones.
Layering different textures creates warmth and interest while still feeling timeless. Even within a neutral palette, mixing tones creates depth and interest.

We love how you styled your Rug! What drew you to that particular piece?

I was immediately drawn to its softness – the organic shape softens the clean lines throughout the space and complements the curves found in the furniture and décor. It adds warmth and texture without overwhelming the room, which aligns perfectly with the calm, relaxed atmosphere I wanted to create throughout the home. It feels refined yet approachable – exactly how I want the space to feel.

How does your rug tie into your overall home style or mood?

My living area is completely hardwood so adding in rugs anchors each area – in this case to set apart the dining area from the kitchen and lounge area. It helps to frame this space while adding in a sense of warmth and cosiness that makes you want to stay a while.

Where do you get most of your home styling inspiration from travel, nature, Pinterest, or somewhere else?

A mix of travel and Instagram. I’m often inspired by luxury hotels, beautifully designed hospitality spaces and homes that feel effortlessly lived in. I also find inspiration in natural light, the way moves through a space throughout the day. Instagram is great for collecting ideas, but I try to focus on creating a home that feels personal rather than replicating a trend.

What advice would you give someone wanting to refresh their space on a budget?

Start with the pieces that have the biggest impact. A beautiful rug, new cushions or a lamp can completely transform the feeling of a room without requiring a full redesign. Some of the most inviting homes aren’t the most expensive – they’re the ones that feel thoughtful, comfortable and reflect the owner’s personality.
