• Check the care label before applying water or cleaning products. Spot clean unless the rug carries a clear washable instruction. Full soaking often affects backing, dyes, fibre texture, or shape. Washable rugs still need the stated water temperature, cycle, drying method, and load guidance.
• Rotate your rug every three to six months. Regular rotation spreads foot traffic across the surface and reduces uneven wear. Remember, rugs near windows or beneath furniture need closer attention because one section receives more light or pressure.
• Limit prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Strong sunlight fades colour over time, especially on darker shades and natural fibres. Curtains, blinds, window films, or a revised room layout help reduce exposure during the brightest part of the day.
• Treat loose threads with care. Never pull a raised fibre or strand. Trim the loose end level with the surrounding surface using small scissors and contact an expert when binding, fringe, seams, or larger woven sections begin to loosen.
• Clean spills as soon as possible. Remove solid material with a spoon or blunt edge, then blot liquid with clean paper towel or a white cloth. Work from the outer edge towards the centre. Press gently and avoid rubbing, since friction spreads the mark and pushes moisture deeper into the pile.
• Vacuum regularly using gentle suction. Choose a flat floor head suited to the rug’s pile. Avoid rotating brushes and beater bars unless the care label approves their use. Aggressive attachments pull fibres, disturb loops, create fuzzing, and place stress on woven edges.
• Test every stain treatment on a hidden section first. Avoid bleach, hydrogen peroxide, optical brighteners, and harsh solvents. These ingredients often lighten colour or weaken fibres. Use a small amount of suitable cleaner and follow the product directions.
• Allow damp areas to dry fully. Improve airflow around both sides of the affected section and keep furniture away until no moisture remains. Poor drying encourages odour, colour transfer, mildew, or backing damage.
• Use proper storage methods when a rug leaves the floor for an extended period. Vacuum first, confirm the surface is dry, then roll rather than fold. Wrap the roll in breathable protective material and store horizontally in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, moisture, pests, and heavy items.
• For a mild food or drink mark, prepare light detergent foam with a small amount of dishwashing liquid and water. Apply the suds with a sponge without saturating the area. Blot again, dab with clean water to lift residue, then remove moisture with dry paper towel.
• Arrange professional cleaning for deep soil, broad staining, delicate fibres, persistent odour, pet accidents, water damage, or uncertain care requirements. Choose someone with experience in the rug’s fibre, construction, dye type, and backing.
